That is how Old Home Week starts in Centerville, and if you have lived in the village for more than a summer or two, you can feel the calendar tilt.
The Centerville Civic Association runs the week from August 1 through 8, a tradition first started in 1904 as a weeklong celebration of the village, with each day featuring a different event designed to foster community, welcome guests, and celebrate with neighbors. What the schedule does not tell you is how the pieces fit together, which is the part worth paying attention to.
Eight days, one connected calendar
The mistake a newer resident makes is treating Old Home Week as a menu of events to pick from. It is not. It is the one week a year when the village's standing institutions, the ones that operate quietly the other fifty-one weeks, run their calendars in sequence. The Civic Association is the conductor. The Public Library, the Historical Museum, the Tabernacle at Craigville, South Congregational Church, and the Craigville Beach Association each take a night or a morning.
If you skip the Monday movie at the library, you are not just missing a film. You are missing the room where next fall's Village Fest volunteers get quietly recruited. The Civic Association's own calendar makes this cadence visible, with the Community Yard Sale on Saturday August 1st from 8 to noon, an Appreciation Concert Sunday August 2nd from 6 to 8 pm, and later dates already booked for the October 10 Village Fest and Pumpkin Decorating and the December Christmas Stroll Along Main Street. The week is a hinge, not a highlight reel.
Where the anchors actually sit

- 1856 Country Store, 555 Main Street. Open year-round. The red building's history goes back to 1840 when it was built to store cranberries after the harvest, was turned into a shoe store by Samuel and Moses Hallet in 1842, then became a general store in 1856. The Uchman family has run it since the mid-1970s, and the Republican and Democrat benches out front are the closest thing the village has to a public square.
- Four Seas Ice Cream, 360 South Main Street. In 1934, an old blacksmith's barn was refashioned to churn out homemade ice cream for summer visitors, and founder W. Wells Watson named it for the four bodies of water surrounding Cape Cod. It is the oldest ice cream shop in Massachusetts, with some recipes dating back more than nine decades.
- Centerville Historical Museum, on Main Street across from the old schoolhouse. This is where the Old Home Week yard sale traditionally sets up on the closing Saturday.
- The Tabernacle at the Craigville Concert Center, on Lake Elizabeth Drive. The building people drive past all summer without registering. During Old Home Week it hosts free concerts, including the Cape Harmony a cappella performance that closes the opening Sunday.
The half-mile between the 1856 Country Store and Four Seas is the whole village center. If your week feels scattered, you are probably driving when you could be walking.
The Craigville and Covell's distinction
Out-of-towners conflate the two beaches. Residents cannot afford to. The Old Home Week 5K starts and ends at Covell's Beach, not Craigville, which changes both the parking geometry and the traffic on Craigville Beach Road on race night. The concert-and-bonfire that closes the week is at Craigville Beach itself, and it is the moment when the whole village, and a good number of children who have been at the water all day, converges on one spot.
The Moonlighters have anchored that closing night for years, playing rock, R&B, funk, and blues on the sand while the bonfire is built. If you are hosting family that week, this is the night to bring them to. Nothing else on the summer calendar puts this many neighbors in one place at the same time.
The point of Old Home Week is not that anything new happens. It is that the village compresses a year of civic life into eight days so that people who moved away can still recognize it when they come back.
The parking pass math
Here is a number worth setting against a baseline. Parking at Craigville Beach runs up to $25 per day, which sounds steep until you realize the town day pass is honored at several other Barnstable beaches on the same day. A single Tuesday of Old Home Week can legitimately include a morning at Craigville, an afternoon at Covell's for the 5K route walk-through, and a late swim somewhere quieter, all on one receipt. If you go after mid-afternoon, the lot fee drops off entirely at Craigville, which is the window most residents use.
The Craigville Beach Association, which is the private membership beach with the bathhouses at the west end, operates on a separate system. Member guest visits are capped at 30 per member for July and 30 for August, with a guest fee of $10 per guest on weekdays and $15 on weekends and holidays, and the 2026 holiday is Friday July 3. If a friend of yours is a member and you are planning to bring visiting family down during Old Home Week, ask early. The August guest count fills up.
What Four Seas' menu tells you about timing
Small signal, useful reading. Four Seas makes a Fresh Cantaloupe flavor only when cantaloupe is in season, usually late June or early July into August. If you walk in during Old Home Week and Cantaloupe is still on the board, the produce side of the summer is still holding. When it drops off, you are two weeks from the shoulder. Old-timers use it as a calendar the way farmers use the first frost.
The other flavor worth timing your visit around is Fresh Peach, described on the shop's own history as Jackie Kennedy's favorite. Both flavors sell out in windows that do not repeat. Old Home Week is often the last reliable stretch to catch them.
A working outline of the week
For a resident who wants to be present without over-committing, this is a defensible order:
- Saturday morning: the Community Yard Sale on Main Street. Show up early, walk the whole run, then coffee.
- Sunday evening: the Appreciation Concert, then Cape Harmony at the Tabernacle if the schedule holds to prior years.
- Monday: Library movie night. Bring a neighbor who has not been in the building since the last renovation.
- Midweek: skip the beach at noon, go at 4 pm when the parking fee resets to zero.
- Thursday: the Old Home Week 5K at Covell's Beach. Register or just walk down and cheer at the turn.

Ice cream fits anywhere. Four Seas is located just a quarter-mile from the beach, in the old blacksmith-shop-turned-ice-cream-store where generations of summer visitors and Cape Cod residents have taken their families. The line on the closing Saturday is worth budgeting twenty minutes for.
Why the week matters past the week
